Interview with his Exellency the Ambassador of the State of Kuwait, Mr. Abdulhamid Abdullah AI-Awadhi
ARAB FORUM: Mr. Ambassador, the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, recently visited Kuwait. Are you satisfied with the results of this visit?
Ambassador Al-Awadhi: All of the meetings that the distinguished German Chancellor Dr. Merkel has held with Kuwaiti officials were primarily discussions about the latest regional developments. Topping the agenda were the developments regarding the peace process in the Near East and the necessity of activating it and bringing it onto the right tract. We appreciate and support the efforts of the German Chancellor for a diplomatic solution to the crisis over Iran’s nuclear program and the avoidance of a military con-frontation that could plunge the whole region into a dangerous Situation with unforeseeable, dire results. In general, one can state that the visit demonstrated once again how the Kuwaiti and Ger-man views conform on all issues of mutual interest.
Arab Forum: There have already been state visits during the last two years, including by Chancellor Schröder and a number of federal ministers, and the prime minister of Kuwait, who visited Berlin in the autumn of 2006. Can we therefore speak of excellent relations between Kuwait and Germany?
Ambassador Al-Awadhi: Indeed you can. Because Dr. Merkel’s visit to Kuwait took place only a few months after the visit of the prime minister of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Nasser El-Hamad Al-Ahmad Al-Sahah, in Berlin that represented a new high point in the outstanding Kuwaiti-German relations. This relationship has been experiencing a new stage of cooperati-on in all areas since the visit of former German chancellor Schröder at the end of February 2005. This cooperation is reflected in a series of reciprocal visits at the ministerial level. I’ll mention here As an example the visits of German Foreign Minister Steinmeier and German Minister of Economy Glos. A few days after the visit of the German chancellor in Kuwait, Kuwait Minister of the Interior Sheikh Jaber Al-Moubarak Al-Sabah followed an invitation from his German counterpart Dr. Schäuble and came to Berlin. During this visit a security pact between Kuwait and Germany was signed, which speaks of the wide variety of bilateral relationships and great diversity of the areas of cooperation between both countries.
